The Challenge

This blog is about a unique experience: the mHealth Grand Tour, a bike ride from Brussels to Barcelona to raise awareness of diabetes, physical activity and mobile health solutions.

Going from Brussels to Barcelona in just 13 days, it is 2,100km long with more than 22,000 meters of climbs. More than a simple sports event, the mHealth Grand Tour will bring together diabetes patient communities and the mobile and healthcare industries to raise awareness of diabetes, promote healthy and active living and show how mobile health solutions can empower people with diabetes.

Heading east of Brussels and down to Barcelona, the Grand Tour route incorporates breath-taking scenery and quiet country roads. In the spirit of Europe’s Grand Tours, the route will take riders through places of interest across Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France and Spain, giving participants the opportunity to enjoy the sights and local culture.

The ride will start in Brussels on the 5 September and finish in Barcelona on 19 September 2013.

The International Diabetes Federation European Region – IDF Europe, is a partner of the Grand Tour, an event organized by the GSMA, the organization that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide.

In addition, IDF Europe has a team of riders taking part in the bike ride. Our two ambassadors, Sophie Peresson, IDF Europe Regional Director, and Katie Gallagher, IDF Europe Policy Officer, will be on the road together with about 100 other cyclists -professionals or amateurs- to raise awareness of diabetes and of the importance of physical activity for diabetes prevention and management. IDF Europe will also count on the support of several national and local diabetes associations to spread the word and make a difference.

Through this blog, we want to share this extraodinary experience with you, and join forces with all the key stakeholders involved to make a real difference for all the people living with diabetes in Europe.

Join us and spread the word!
